WRITER
MINI-PROFILE
Garry Keane directs this short piece on the novelist, poet and short story
writer Dermot Healy. The location is his home overlooking the Atlantic
Ocean in Sligo. It is a beautiful atmospheric piece and is driven by Healy's
poems from his collection 'Hammerhead'.
Healy is fast becoming an international writer of note. Over the years
he has edited two literary journals Force 10 and Drumlin. His last novel
'A Goat's Song' is one of the finest Irish novels of recent years combining
love story, tragedy and some of the greatest evocations of the Irish landscape
ever written.
His memoir 'The Bend for Home' is a lyrical retelling of some of the main
events in his life, combining humorous incidental anecdote with heart-breaking
sadness.
His poetry collection 'The Ballyconnell Colours' shows him to be a poet
in love with music and storytelling.
He has recently appeared in the film adaptation of the book 'I Could Read
the Sky', a powerfully evocative story of the dispossessed and displaced
Irish immigrants in Britain.
